In what can only be described as a travesty of justice, former Navy sailor Jinchao Wei received a measly 16-year prison sentence for committing one of the most heinous crimes imaginable: selling America's military secrets to Communist China.

The Department of Justice announced that Wei, 25, also known as Patrick Wei, was sentenced to "200 months in prison" for espionage after being convicted by a federal jury in August 2025. But let's be clear – 16 years is an absolute joke for a crime that endangered every American service member and compromised our national security.

Wei was arrested in August 2023 as he arrived for work aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Essex at Naval Base San Diego. Think about that for a moment: this traitor was walking freely among our brave sailors, with access to classified information that he was actively selling to our greatest adversary.

Social media users are expressing their outrage over this pathetic sentence. @STLightMin reported on the "200 months for China espionage," while The Hill tweeted about the former sailor "selling information to China."

A Slap on the Wrist for Treason

While hardworking Americans get decades in prison for non-violent drug offenses, this spy who literally sold out his country gets 16 years? This is exactly the kind of weak-kneed approach to national security that has emboldened our enemies for far too long.

Patriots like @RocioMeza79 are spreading awareness about this "Ex-San Diego Navy sailor convicted of spying for China," but awareness isn't enough. We need justice.

Communist China is actively working to undermine American military superiority, and traitors like Wei are helping them do it. Every classified document, every operational detail, every piece of intelligence this spy handed over could have cost American lives.

How many more Chinese spies are embedded in our military right now? How many are getting away with it because our justice system treats espionage like a white-collar crime instead of the act of war that it truly is?

Meanwhile Hunter Biden walks free while actual spies get country club sentences. The two-tier justice system is real folks.

Absolutely infuriating! China is our biggest military threat and we're treating their spies like shoplifters.

16 years?! Are you kidding me? This traitor should be facing life in prison or worse. Our justice system has gone completely soft on national security threats.

Agreed 100%. In my day, treason meant serious consequences. This is a slap on the wrist.

What classified information did he sell? The article doesn't specify but if it compromised our submarine technology or naval operations, 16 years is absolutely pathetic.

From what I read elsewhere, it involved nuclear submarine secrets. Makes this sentence even more outrageous.

How many more Chinese spies are embedded in our military and government? This case probably just scratched the surface of a much bigger problem.

I served 22 years in the Navy and this makes me sick. We took oaths to defend this country, not sell it out for Chinese money. Disgusting betrayal of everything we stand for.
