In a stunning display of organizational incompetence, the Republican Party in New Mexico has completely failed to field a candidate against Democrat Senator Ben Ray Luján in November's election, handing the progressive incumbent an uncontested victory.
The only Republican candidate who stepped forward, Christopher Vanden Heuvel, couldn't even manage to collect enough signatures to secure the party's nomination—a basic requirement that any serious campaign should be able to accomplish months in advance.
This isn't just embarrassing—it's a betrayal of New Mexico conservatives who deserve a choice at the ballot box. While President Trump is working tirelessly to implement his America First agenda from Washington, establishment Republicans in states like New Mexico are proving they can't even handle Campaign Politics 101.
Pattern of GOP Establishment Failures
Luján's free pass isn't an isolated incident. Three other Republican candidates in various New Mexico races also failed to gather sufficient signatures, revealing a pattern of organizational dysfunction that should infuriate every conservative in the state.
Where was the state party leadership? Where were the grassroots organizers? How does a major political party allow multiple candidates to fall short of such a fundamental requirement?
Meanwhile, Luján—who has consistently voted with the radical left agenda—gets to focus his resources on helping other Democrats instead of defending his own record of supporting open borders, green energy boondoggles, and big government spending.
Missed Opportunity in Trump Era
This failure is particularly galling considering the political momentum conservatives have nationwide under President Trump's leadership. New Mexico voters, like Americans everywhere, are hungry for representatives who will support the America First agenda, secure the border, and fight against the deep state.
Instead, they're stuck with Luján for another six years thanks to a Republican establishment that apparently can't organize a signature drive, let alone a winning campaign.
Patriots in New Mexico deserve better than this kind of political malpractice. The question now is whether state GOP leadership will be held accountable for this inexcusable failure—or if they'll just shrug their shoulders and move on to the next election they're unprepared to contest.
