Civil rights leader and longtime Democrat powerbroker Jesse Jackson died Tuesday morning at age 84, his family announced. The two-time presidential candidate had been battling progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare neurological condition that had placed him on life support since November.

Jackson's death marks the end of an era for the civil rights movement and the Democratic Party establishment. For decades, he served as one of the most recognizable faces of the left-wing political machine, wielding considerable influence within Democrat circles and the mainstream media.

The Chicago-based activist first announced his diagnosis with Parkinson's disease in 2017, but his condition deteriorated significantly in recent years. Progressive supranuclear palsy, the neurological disorder that ultimately claimed his life, affects movement, balance, and cognitive function.

A Complex Legacy

Jackson rose to prominence in the 1960s working alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., though his relationship with the civil rights icon was sometimes complicated. He claimed to be present during King's assassination in Memphis in 1968, though other witnesses disputed some details of his account.

His two runs for the Democrat presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988 made him the first African American to win major party primary contests, paving the way for future candidates like Barack Obama. Jackson's Rainbow Coalition sought to unite minorities and working-class Americans under the Democrat banner.

However, Jackson's career was not without controversy. His 1984 reference to New York City as "Hymietown" during a conversation with reporters sparked significant backlash. He later apologized for the anti-Semitic remark.

Throughout the Trump era, Jackson remained a vocal critic of conservative policies, particularly on immigration and civil rights issues. His Chicago-based Rainbow PUSH Coalition continued advocating for progressive causes until his health declined.

Jackson is survived by his wife Jacqueline and five children, including former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., who served prison time for campaign finance violations.

While Americans across the political spectrum will undoubtedly reflect on Jackson's impact on civil rights and politics, his passing represents the end of an era for the Democrat establishment's old guard. The question now becomes: who will fill the void left by this influential figure in the party's power structure?
