A freshman Republican congressman is putting America's Gold Star families first with his inaugural piece of legislation - something the Washington establishment has shamefully neglected for nearly two decades.
Rep. Matt Van Epps (R-TN), fresh from his special election victory in December, introduced the HONOR Gold Star Families Act on Thursday to increase the "death gratuity" payment for families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
Think about this, Patriots: While Congress has found billions for foreign wars and pet projects, they haven't bothered to increase benefits for our fallen heroes' families since the early 2000s. That's the kind of backwards priorities that drove Americans to vote for change in 2024.
Finally, Someone Who Gets It
Van Epps isn't wasting time with typical freshman posturing. His first act in Congress directly honors those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom - exactly the kind of America First priorities President Trump campaigned on.
The current death gratuity hasn't kept pace with inflation or the true cost of losing a loved one in service to country. While Washington elites get richer, Gold Star families have been left behind by a system that talks about "supporting our troops" but fails to back it up with action.
"Our Gold Star families deserve more than empty promises and flag-waving photo ops. They deserve real support that reflects the magnitude of their sacrifice," a congressional aide familiar with the legislation told reporters.
This bipartisan effort shows what's possible when politicians focus on serving Americans instead of serving themselves. Unlike the performative politics we've seen from career swamp creatures, Van Epps is delivering results on day one.
Trump's Influence Already Showing
This legislation perfectly aligns with President Trump's commitment to putting America's military families first. While the previous administration was busy with woke military policies and overseas misadventures, the Trump-Vance team has consistently prioritized our warriors and their families.
It's telling that it takes a Trump-backed freshman to accomplish what decades of establishment Republicans and Democrats couldn't - or wouldn't - do. This is exactly why voters rejected the status quo in November.
When will Congress finally match their rhetoric about "supporting our troops" with the resources our Gold Star families actually deserve?
