The Iranian regime is living on borrowed time, and unlike the tragic missed opportunity in Iraq over three decades ago, the conditions are finally right for the Iranian people to overthrow their oppressive theocratic rulers.
In early 1991, President George H.W. Bush had the perfect opportunity to march to Baghdad, topple Saddam Hussein, and liberate the Iraqi people from one of history's most brutal dictators. The military tools were in place, and oppressed minorities like the Kurds - who had suffered horrific chemical attacks that killed thousands - were ready to fight alongside American forces.
But Bush chose to stop short, abandoning the Iraqi people to decades more suffering under Saddam's boot. It was a failure that would haunt American foreign policy for generations.
Why Iran Will Succeed Where Iraq Couldn't
The Iranian situation is fundamentally different, and the signs point to inevitable regime collapse. Here's why the mullahs' days are numbered:
First, Iran's opposition movement is organic and widespread, spanning all social classes and ethnic groups. Unlike Iraq's fragmented resistance, Iranian patriots are united by a common enemy - the Islamic Republic that has stolen their nation's wealth and dignity for over four decades.
Second, the economic pressure is unsustainable. Trump's maximum pressure campaign in his first term, combined with internal corruption and mismanagement, has created a powder keg. The regime can barely pay its Revolutionary Guards, let alone provide basic services to 85 million increasingly angry Iranians.
"The Iranian people have something the Iraqis never had - a clear memory of freedom and prosperity before the ayatollahs took over," explains Middle East analyst Dr. Sarah Martinez. "They know what they're fighting for."
Most importantly, Iran's youth - over 60% of the population - have grown up connected to the outside world through social media and underground networks. They've seen the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement inspire the globe, and they know the world is watching.
The regime's desperate attempts to maintain control through brutal crackdowns and executions only prove how terrified they are of their own people. When tyrants start killing children in the streets, their end is near.
President Trump now has the chance to support Iranian freedom fighters without repeating his father's mistakes in Iraq. The question isn't whether the Iranian people will overthrow their oppressors - it's whether America will stand with them when they do.
