Democrats are scrambling to find any excuse to oppose common-sense voter ID requirements as Republicans prepare to bring a national photo ID bill to the Senate floor Thursday. Their latest strategy? Suddenly claiming they believe in states' rights – the same principle they've trampled for decades.
The legislation would require Americans to present a driver's license or comparable photo identification to cast a ballot, a measure supported by overwhelming majorities across party lines. But don't expect Democrats to let the will of the people get in their way.
Instead, they're dusting off arguments about local control and states' rights that they've ignored whenever it suited their agenda. Remember when they federalized election law with their failed 'For the People Act'? Apparently, states' rights only matter when they can be used to protect potential voter fraud.
The Hypocrisy Is Staggering
For years, Democrats have pushed for federal control over everything from bathroom policies to election procedures. They've sued states that tried to clean up their voter rolls and fought tooth and nail against basic security measures. But now, faced with President Trump's mandate to secure our elections, they're suddenly constitutional scholars concerned about federalism.
"This is about protecting the integrity of our elections," one Republican source told reporters. "Every legal American should want to ensure that only eligible citizens are voting. The fact that Democrats oppose this tells you everything you need to know about their priorities."
The real question isn't whether states have rights – it's whether Democrats have any shame left when it comes to protecting election integrity.
Americans can see right through this charade. We require photo ID for everything from buying alcohol to boarding a plane, but somehow Democrats think requiring the same basic verification for voting is too burdensome? Give us a break.
President Trump won his second term partly on promises to secure our elections and restore faith in our democratic process. This voter ID bill is exactly what patriots voted for – and exactly what Democrats fear most: elections they can't manipulate.
Will Republicans have the backbone to push this through despite Democrat obstruction? The American people are watching, and they won't forget who stands with election integrity and who stands with the swamp.
