The vultures are already circling. Just weeks after veteran Rep. Mark Amodei (R-NV) announced his retirement from Nevada's 2nd Congressional District, Democrats are scrambling to field a candidate in what they're desperately hoping might be a pickup opportunity. But are they setting themselves up for another humiliating defeat?
Teresa Benitez-Thompson, the former Assembly majority leader turned chief of staff to Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, threw her hat in the ring Tuesday. She's betting that Amodei's departure creates an opening in a district that has been reliably red - but she might want to check the electoral math from 2024 first.
"This district represents a possible pickup opportunity for Democrats," Benitez-Thompson claimed, apparently forgetting that Nevada voters just delivered a crushing rebuke to the failed Biden agenda and embraced President Trump's America First vision.
Another Far-Left Candidate in MAGA Territory?
Here's what Benitez-Thompson and her Democratic handlers don't seem to understand: Nevada's 2nd District didn't suddenly become liberal just because a longtime incumbent is stepping down. These are the same voters who watched four years of Biden's border crisis, inflation nightmare, and woke military policies - and said "enough."
As chief of staff to Aaron Ford, Benitez-Thompson has been part of the same Democratic establishment that Nevadans are increasingly rejecting. While hardworking families in rural Nevada struggle with rising costs and border security concerns, she's been pushing the same tired Democratic talking points from Carson City.
"Nevada voters have made it clear they want representatives who will secure the border, cut wasteful spending, and put America First - not more of the same failed Democratic policies."
The Trump-Vance administration's early victories on deportations and government efficiency are already resonating with voters nationwide. Does Benitez-Thompson really think Nevadans want to send someone to Congress who will obstruct the MAGA agenda they just voted for?
Republicans should take nothing for granted, but if 2024 taught us anything, it's that voters can smell desperation. And right now, that's exactly what this Democratic "opportunity" looks like - pure desperation from a party still in denial about why they lost so badly.
Will Nevada's 2nd District voters choose Trump's America First agenda, or will they fall for another Democrat promising to "fight" the president they just elected?
